Online Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) in California
Learn to accept difficult emotions, clarify your values and create a more meaningful life.
OVERVIEW
What exactly is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based approach with the goal of creating a healthier relationship with your thoughts and emotions while living in closer alignment with your values.
Instead of getting caught in the cycle of “fixing” or avoiding difficult feelings, ACT gives you practical tools to acknowledge what’s showing up and gently shift how you respond.
Over time, you’ll build flexibility, resilience and clarity so that even when challenges arise, you can continue to feel confident and keep moving toward the life you want.
ACT is not about trying to silence your thoughts or “stay positive.”
It’s about learning to notice what’s happening inside you, making space for it without judgment and choosing actions that reflect your values.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy is designed to help you …

WHAT TO EXPECT
Every ACT session is collaborative and tailored to your unique needs, but here’s what the process often looks like:
What actually happens during ACT?
-
We’ll start by talking about what brings you to therapy, your past experiences and the goals you’d like to focus on. This gives us a foundation for the work ahead.
-
Together, we’ll look at the patterns in how you respond to difficult emotions or situations. We’ll explore what strategies you have previously used to avoid difficult thoughts and feelings. Then, you’ll begin practicing mindfulness techniques that help you notice these experiences without being swept away by them.
-
A central part of ACT is identifying what really matters to you and your values. These aren’t external expectations or rules, but the inner compass that guides how you want to live and show up in your relationships, career and family life.
-
ACT uses six processes to build what’s called psychological flexibility:
Acceptance: making space for emotions without needing to push them away
Cognitive Defusion: seeing thoughts as just thoughts, not absolute truths
Being Present: learning to stay grounded in the here and now
Self-as-Context: seeing yourself as more than your experiences or feelings
Values: clarifying what matters most to you
Committed Action: taking steps that align with your values, even when it’s hard
-
Between sessions, you’ll be encouraged to practice what we cover – whether that’s a mindfulness exercise, journaling about values or trying a new behavior in real life. These practices help you build confidence and integrate ACT tools into everyday life.
-
As therapy progresses, you’ll start noticing a shift: less struggle with your thoughts and more freedom to live in a way that feels authentic to you. We’ll celebrate growth, adjust strategies as needed and plan for how you’ll carry these skills forward beyond therapy.
